KYOSHIRO, THE SWORDSMAN (NEMURI KYOSHIRO SAPPO CHO)
This is
the first film in the series starring
ICHIKAWA Raizo. There was a previous version of the
series in black and white from Toho. After Kyoshiro disposes of
a half-dozen ambushers (and thus demonstrating his skill), their
master, Lord Maeda, sends his ward Chisa to seduce him and set
him against his enemy, Chen Sun. Chen is trying to protect a
document that, if revealed, will cause the downfall of Maeda's
Clan, an event Chen would relish. Then known as JYO Kenzaburo,
the great WAKAYAMA Tomisaburo
portrays Chen Sun, the 13th descendant of the founder of
Shorinji Kenpo. Deception is piled upon treachery, and to solve
the mystery, Kyoshiro must find a man who is already dead, and
get him to reveal the secret of The Chinese Jade.
Starring ICHIKAWA Raizo NAKAMURA Tamao, JO Kenzaburo
(Wakayama Tomisaburo)

EXPLOITS OF NEMURI KYOSHIRO (NEMURI KYOSHIRO ENGETSU GIRI)
During a time
when samurai were permitted to test the sharpness of their
blades by slaughtering innocent peasants, it was not uncommon
for them to do so. Using his unique Full Moon Cutting
style,
Nemuri Kyoshiro
rebels against this practice and sets out to protect
innocent people threatened by this practice. Kyoshiro
demonstrates his skill by slicing the clothes from the body of a
female opponent, and gets involved in a plot that could spell
his doom! The action is fast and furious in this exciting motion
picture.

ADVENTURES OF NEMURI KYOSHIRO (NEMURI KYOSHIRO SHOBU)
This is the second film
in the series about the half-breed Son of The Black Mass
starring ICHIKAWA Raizo. After limited success with the first
film Daiei Films brought in noted director MISUMI Kenji to, in
effect, save the series. Needless to say, this film was a
commercial success thus assuring that the series would go on.
Still unaware of his family background, and pointedly avoiding
any inquiries into it, he nevertheless travels in exclusive
circles where his handsome visage endears him to many women.
Kyoshiro is drugged and kidnapped for the pleasure of the
Shogun's degenerate daughter, Princess Taka. One of the
highlights of this film is the famous ambush at the public
baths!

NEMURI KYOSHIRO AT BAY (NEMURI KYOSHIRO JOYO KEN)
In the fourth
film in the series we finally learn of something about the
mysterious red-haired ronin as he must face his deadliest enemy
again, the powerful Chinese Monk, Chen Sun (WAKAYAMA Tomisaburo,
who was then known as JO Kenzaburo). Chen wants to finish the
duel they had begun on the beach at the conclusion of the first
film. Not only is this one of the best entries in the series, it
is one of the greatest samurai films ever made. The evil
Princess Kiku, an illegitimate daughter of the Shogun wears a
mask to hide her true ugliness. A woman possessed of an evil
nature that causes her to kill without mercy anyone foolish
enough to be seduced by her. While she targets Kyoshiro as the
next victim of her insane lust, he is trying to save the life of
a ‘living saint’ who may know the secrets behind his birth.
Starring ICHIKAWA Raizo FUJIMURA Shiho, KUBO Naoko, JO
Kenzaburo
Directed by IKEHIRO Kazuo
1964 81 min.

samurai as he tries to bring a priceless statue of ‘Santa
Maria’ to Kyoto in order to save a clan in jeopardy of being
abolished by the Shogunate. Along the way, he must fight his
way out of numerous traps set by the renegade Christians who

even after seeing the superb set of battle swords the ‘Son
of the Black Mass’ carries, which were forged by the
legendary Masamune, one of the most famous Japanese
swordsmiths to have created the sharpest of swords. Meanwhile, Kyoshiro has been asked to help a Princess who is
trying to avoid an internal war between the leading
retainers of her clan.
While Kyoshiro declined getting involved in the clan’s
problem, the death of a woman he once met forces him to take
up his sword against some of the deadliest enemies he’s ever
had to face! Tamura Takahiro co-stars as a master swordsman who may want
the life of the red-haired ronin, as well. Only time will

result of trying to help Hyogo, a youth, who like him is a
child of the satanic Black Mass. The brother and sister vie with each other in attempts to
take Kyoshiro’s life, laying trap after trap, and attacking
him with poison arrows as well. With his life in grave danger, can he still reach the
“Demon’s Fortress” in time to save the youth, and how will
his ‘Full Moon Cut’ fare against the giant bodyguard of the
princess, a beast of a man who seeks to blind Kyoshiro
before taking his life. Directed by Yasuda Kimiyoshi, one of Daiei’s greatest
filmmakers.

When a mysterious ronin poses as Kyoshiro while on a
devastating murder spree, he seeks to anger the sardonic
‘Son of the Black Mass’ enough to cause him to fight a duel,
and determine who is the strongest swordsman in Japan.
Having mastered the ‘Full Moon Cut’ the assassin plans to do
Nemuri in with his own technique. Meanwhile a plot is hatched inside the O’oku or Shogun’s
Harem that could change the legal succession of the next
Shogun. Abortions, assassinations, and seductions are all carried
out with cold efficiency while sneaky Iga Ninja attack using
nerve gas, while they take on the appearance of the Japanese
goblins called ‘Tengu’. Can Kyoshiro survive these vicious attacks, and still be
able to defeat his “Shadow” in the final showdown in the
series. The was Raizo’s last film as Nemuri, he passed away soon
afterward.

NEMURI KYOSHIRO MADE-FOR-TV MOVIE
Starring: TAMURA Masakazu Directed by
TANAKA Tokuzo
Nemuri Kyoshiro's discovery of a plot to have an imposter succeed to
the position of Shogun leads him to Kyoto in order to help Tokugawa
Ieyoshi, and keep the succession in its proper order. Noted film
actor Tamura Masakazu returns as Nemuri Kyoshiro in this made
for TV Special after his successful portrayal of the 'Full-Moon'
swordsman in the TV Series. Kyoshiro rescues Shizu who was being
abused by her husband, ever since she had been violated by the man
posing as Ieyoshi. He then learned that Ieyoshi had been acting
oddly ever since returning from Kyoto 6 months ago. Sir Fumiya's
investigation of the O'oku (Shogun’s harem in Edo Castle) uncovered
the plot and reported that Sir Higo-no-kami had been controlling the
fraud. That's when Kyoshiro heads to Kyoto to find clues... The
original story ”Nemuri Kyoshiro Komu Nisshi” for this TV
movie was written by famous author, Shibata Renzaburo. Tamura
Masakazu takes the Nemuri character to a whole new dimension. He
can play the sensitive, the just, the cold-blooded, and at times,
the ultra violent Nemuri. Adding to that, excellent swordfights make
this one of Tamura's all-time best!
